 Chikito

Chikito began his singing career in 1992 with the hip hop group Med Level - the most established hip hop group at that time in Mozambique. In 2000 he was invited to form part of the Mabulu project, which brought together and fused the styles of the old and new musical generations. Mabulu released their debut album Karimbo in the same year. In 2002 Mabulu won the title of best newcomer in the BBC Awards and competed in the Kara Awards at Sun City South Africa in the category best African Band. From 2002 to 2005 the group continued to tour playing in many major festivals in Europe, Australia and South Africa.

In 2006 Chikito recorded his first solo CD, entitled Da Bikas Se A Fikile; an innovative album, which fused rap and Marrabenta, a form of Mozambican dance music developed in Maputo and influenced by Mozambican and Portuguese folk music as well as Western popular music.

Chikito participated in the first Power in the Voice project in 2005 and was nominated best school mentor. He has also worked in a number of projects: including with Helvetas, a Swiss NGO, in the area of civil society education in the rural zones; and with the Arte Social/FDC HIV/AIDS Awareness Road Show as an activist.

'With PIV [Power in the Voice] I'd like to teach and to learn! It's a really interesting project and I look forward to sharing experiences with the other artists. It's a great way to discover new talents and to promote English through rap!' Chikito
