Olopeng Rabasimane
Olopeng (stage name Lopsack) was born in the diamond-mining town of Jwaneng, in the southern region of Botswana. Jwaneng was a town afflicted with many social ills including crime, poverty, racialism and social inequality. Olopeng's background and early experiences have since inspired his work as a dramatist and storyteller.
Olopeng specialises in satire and social commentary. His 2001 play 'A Man with a Certificate', depicting the life of a graduate who roams the streets with his degree certificate looking for a job in vain, won the National Drama Championships as did the follow up 'Suppose a Black Man Tells a Story' ('when you see a white person running on the road he/she is jogging, but when you see a black person running on the road he/she is running from the police') in 2002.
Olopeng also uses his skills to conduct dramatic coaching clinics, conferences and workshops in high schools across the country. He is currently tutoring military history at the University of Botswana.
'Power In the Voice (PIV) is a true vehicle of youth empowerment... I want to be a committed member of this historic talent-search programme. It gives me the opportunity to contribute effectively to the development of young talent in the country'. Olopeng Rabasimane
