 Zubz with shades

Johannesburg-based artist Ndabaningi Mabuye (aka Zubz) is one of the most popular MCs performing in South Africa today. Born in Zambia and raised in Zimbabwe he is hugely vocal and proud of his roots. Speaking about his new album Headphone Music in a Parallel World, he enthuses that:

'There is a sense of patriotism throughout, to my home Southern Africa... I'm like an orator on this album, I'm focusing a lot more on what songs actually mean, on ideas and messages... I've covered a lot of African related issues like poverty, neocolonialism, the frustrations that we go through as black people in Africa and just trying to shift the values and order which we prioritise, such as family and love and community and heritage.'

Two years ago Zubz was nominated for a prestigious SAMA award for his debut album Listeners Digest. He also runs his own label; the trailblazing Outrageous Records, which is home to many other popular artists, including H20, Optical Illusion, Pebbles, Miles and Mgodoyi.

For Zubz, his music is about art, expression and being true to himself: 'It's not your stereotypical boom bap hip hop, Headphone Music - In A Parallel World is for the more open minded, experimental, more searching kind of person'.
