Mozambique was host to the British Council's inaugural Power in the Voice event in Maputo in 2005. There was a Voice Fair, which gave people the chance to come together and share ideas, tell stories, watch others perform, talk to camera and experience the different techniques and medias used to present and lend power to the voice.

There were workshops for poets, storytellers, dramatists, teachers, translators and students, led by visiting and local experts in their fields. There was also a Rap Competition (Nova Onda de Rap) involving 15 schools around Maputo, as well as English teachers and renowned rap artists, including Jonzi D and the performance poet Adisa. A recording contract was awarded for the winning rap group (see photo above).

The Power in the Voice Rap Competition had a big influence on the entertainment scene in Maputo, proving the popularity of rap and the spoken word as an art form and making young people aware of just what they could achieve with their talents. Following Power in the Voice, a number of the rappers who had been involved ran hip hop concerts in their schools under their own initiative.
