'Music is one of the fastest growing arts industries in Zimbabwe. Lately it has emerged as the most prominent of the voice art forms with growing numbers of successful young musicians, such as Chiwoniso Maraire, Sandra Ndebele and Africa Revenge to name just a few. These artists have quickly established themselves on the local and international music scene alongside gurus of the calibre of Oliver Mtukudzi, Black Umfolosi, and Stella Chiweshe.

However, Zimbabwe's economic situation has also adversly affected some areas of voice art, as is evidenced by the almost near extinction of performance poetry shows. Poets would now rather look for employment than perform to empty halls, but some have adapted their work to blend their poetry with electronic music and achieve great success. Albert Nyathi is one such example in Zimbabwe, who has gone on to perform this genre of poetry/music internationally.

The Book Café in Harare is fighting a lone battle in the country, shoring up voice art by holding a poetry SLAM every first Saturday of the month, which is a good sign that someone somewhere cares about the plight of this art form. We sincerely applaud the organisers.' Christopher Mlalazi, British Council, Zambia
